From mark.sinfield at stcatz.ox.ac.uk Mon Dec 1 16:53:53 2008 From: mark.sinfield at stcatz.ox.ac.uk (Mark Sinfield) Date: Mon, 1 Dec 2008 16:53:53 -0000 Subject: [waterways] Pastorate - 3 December 2008 Message-ID: <00c201c953d5$64e77680$b3324381@catz50b3> Hey everyone, Hope you all had great weekends, and that you haven?t succumbed to any of the bugs and illnesses going round at the moment! Has anyone bought their Christmas tree yet?! ;o) This Wednesday (3 December 2008) we will be meeting for our last main Pastorate of term (sob!), with Alice leading our teaching on the theme of Human Rights as we continue our series on ?Justice?. We?ll be meeting at Alison?s house, and food will be provided at 7.30pm so that we can start at 8pm. As always, if you?re eating with us then please remember to bring a contribution towards costs (suggested ?3.00). It should be a great night, so look forward to seeing you all there! :o) Looking further ahead, there are a few things to add to your already bulging Christmas diaries: 1. The Church Christmas party will be taking place on Wednesday 17 December 2008, from 7.00pm ? 11.00pm in the church. If you?re up for coming along, let us know on Wednesday and we?ll see if we can?t get a table or two reserved so that we can all sit together. I understand that the suggested contribution is ?15 (waged) or ?10 (unwaged), but it?s well worth it as it always tends to be an entertaining evening, and this year we have the promise of ? amazing after-dinner entertainment from live jazz/ funk band ?Our Dad? ? ? intriguing prospect, huh?! Also, if you have any suggested themes for our Pastorate table then let us know 2. On the next 2 Saturdays (6 & 13 December), Christmas gift wrapping will be taking place in the entrance to the Church from 10.30am ? 2.00pm. The idea is to open up the church for weary shoppers so that they can have a cup of coffee whilst their presents are wrapped for free, so if you fancy getting involved in wrapping presents, giving out flyers, serving refreshments/ mince pies, etc, or just want to come along and talk to people then contact Bina Farrow iananbina at ukgateway.net 3. Also on 6 & 13 December 2008, Healing on the Streets will be taking place from 11am - 1pm, meeting at the Parish Centre at 10.30am. Anyone can come along, and full training will be provided! 4. The Aldates candlelit carol services will be taking place on 14 & 21 December 2008, each starting at 6pm in the church, and followed by mulled wine and minced pies in the Christopher Room. Do invite your friends along, it?s a fantastic opportunity for them to come and join in with a mix of classic and contemporary carols/ songs, and to hear a talk on the Christmas message. Also, anyone wanting to be involved in the carol service choir should contact the Parish Centre, and there is a rehearsal next Monday (8 December 2008) at 7pm. 5. If you fancy getting involved in some practical local ?justice? and are around in Oxford in Christmas Day, then the ACT Christmas Event will be taking place in the Parish Centre from 12.30pm onwards on Christmas Day ? email act at aldates.org.uk for more details. So, yes, really hope that you can make it on Wednesday, but if you can?t be there then do let one of the leadership team know so that we can be praying for you. Hi, Please give this some thought. Dear Friends, On December 10th, pro-abortion groups will present petitions asking the United Nation's General Assembly to make abortion a universally recognized human right. The Catholic Family and Human Rights Institute created an alternate petition drive that calls for government to interpret the Universal Declaration of Human Rights as protecting human life from the moment of conception to natural death. They need at least 100,000 signatures by December 10th, the 60th Anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. Please go to the Website: http://www.c-fam.org/publications/id.95/default.asp and sign the petition. Did you know that article 23 states that "Everyone who works has the right to just and favourable remuneration ensuring for himself and his family an existence worthy of human dignity." And yet millions of workers across the world are still exploited and do not receive a fair return for the goods they produce. Where has this year gone?! All very exciting, though ! Anyway, just a quick email to remind you that the Church Christmas Party is at 7.00pm on Wednesday 17 December 2008, in the main church building. There are a few things to note, as follows: 1. If you haven?t already done so and you want to come along, you?ll need to purchase tickets from the Welcome Desk this coming weekend when you?re at church. The cost is ?15.00 per person (waged), but Charlie has confirmed that this is a suggested contribution and so if you are not able to pay the full amount then please don?t let that stop you from coming. I?m not sure whether or not tickets will be available on the door on the night, so it?s probably safest to get them in advance if you can. 2. We will be aiming to get at least one table so that we can all sit together, so if you are intending to come then it would be really useful if you could let one of the Pastorate leadership team know, so that we can try and get the appropriate number of seats/ tables! 3. For those that fancy dressing up, please do feel free to adorn yourself with suitably festive decorations! I?m sure that Mark and Jenny will be embracing this opportunity with their usual enthusiasm, so you won?t be the only one 4. As in previous years, we will be running a Secret Santa event during the evening, with the chance to win fabulous prizes - or ?upgrade? them from other members of the Pastorate! It would therefore be great if everyone who is coming along to the party could bring one present that can go into the bag. Given that we are in the middle of the credit crunch, though, this year?s challenge will be to find the best present that you can for less than ?1 and to bring that along. Happy bargain hunting ! :o) 5. To remind you, this year we agreed that as a Pastorate we would not necessarily send individual Christmas cards to each other, but that we would all sign one big card and then donate the money that we would otherwise have spent on cards to a local charity (possibly the Community Emergency Foodbank, or to the ACT Christmas party). So, if you didn?t contribute any money to that at last week?s Pastorate and would like to do so then feel free to bring some money along to the Christmas party next week and we can hopefully make a real difference to local people in need this Christmas. It should be a really good night, so look forward to hopefully seeing you all there! :o) Finally, just to remind you that the candlelit carol services will be taking place on 14 & 21 December 2008 in the church, both starting at 6pm. Get there early to get a seat! Also, ACT are still looking for people to help with the party that they are running on Christmas Day. There are a range of ways that you can get involved (see below), so if you?re interested then let Cat know and she can give you the relevant details: Sun 21st Dec 2.30 ? 6.00 pm Present sorting/ wrapping Tue 23rd Dec 3.00 ? 6.00pm (approx.) Food preparation/ Room preparation/ General kitchen help/ Present wrapping Thur 25th Dec Various times from 9am-9pm Kitchen serving/ General waiting/ Helping with games/ Clear up etc. Hope you?re all having fab weeks, and that God is really using this time to speak to you all in amongst all the busyness of preparing for Christmas. Message-ID: Goodbye-e-e! This will be my last newsletter from Japan, at least for a while - I'm going to be heading back to the UK on the 7th of January, and am planning to return en famille sometime in 2010. Right now, things are busy with packing and planning for next year, but I'm still very much involved with things here... Kamagasaki A couple of weeks ago a team of us from the English service went down to the Kamagasaki area of Osaka. It's a place where many labourers came to find construction work in the 70s and 80s, during Japan's economic boom. When the bubble burst, many of them found themselves unable to get more work and unable or unwilling to return to their home towns, and ended up homeless or in unstable shared accommodation. A group of churches in Osaka provide soup kitchens, health consultations and other support services to these now aging and elderly former day labourers. Nine of us from the English service volunteered at a Saturday morning feeding programme. You can find more about our day there at http://blog.simon-cozens.org/post/view/1399 We're planning to go back again in early January, this time taking along people from the Japanese and Latin congregations, but we've also become aware of a situation developing closer to home. Nagahama has a large number of factory workers from Latin America; over the Christmas and New Year break, many factories are closing down, laying off staff or not renewing contracts, and so these migrant workers are finding themselves without work. To make matters worse, many of them depend on their employment agencies for their houses, and flights back to Brazil are all booked up. So we could easily have a - very similar - homelessness problem here in Nagahama soon. Currently it looks like it's not a real problem yet, but we're monitoring the situation and we want to make sure we're prepared. Maibara Last week we had our final Maibara English club meeting and this week we had the final Maibara Bible study group for the year. To be honest, I was a little disappointed about what we've managed to achieve the past six months but then I did set myself some very optimistic goals! But looking back we made three or four good contacts in the English club and we were able to share and talk about some deeper issues, and we have had a couple of `visitors' coming to the Bible group, as well as positive inroads into the Maibara community. How things go over the next year is up to God and up to the group, but I pray that they will be able to build on the foundation established so far and see the kingdom of God come in Maibara! Christmas This year we have a number of Christmas events going on. Last Sunday we had our church Christmas party, where we saw a number of people coming to church for the first time. Coming up we have: * English Christmas, Saturday 21st * International concert, caroling and youth group Christmas on the 23rd * Speaking at a candle service in Hikone on the 24th Please pray for messages at these occasions, and for other things listed below, and I hope to see you all soon! Prayer points * On top of our regular work, Henrietta and I are currently thinking about packing, wedding planning and our plans for next year. Pray for God's guidance, and love and understanding between us. * Pray for Latin American migrant workers in Japan during this economic downturn. * Commit the Maibara project to the Lord, and ask Him to build up the believers there -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed...
